Make computer graphics, get a free steak. Benihana Japanese Steakhouse in Santa Monica has announced its “3D-CG” contest. “3D-CG” stands for “three-dimensional computer graphics,” an art form used by software companies, movie animators and hand-held electronic game designers, among others.

The contest is open to novices and experts alike, giving each a venue for their work to be displayed. Benihana manager Michi Shiraishi conceptualized the contest as a way of connecting to the Santa Monica community.

“We have a lot of talent in this area,” he said. “We also have a lot of companies in the Santa Monica area that are looking for new talent. It is my hope that Benihana can be a bridge between the two.”

The grand prize is dinner for eight at Benihana Santa Monica. Monthly winners will receive dinner for two and weekly winners will receive lunch for two — based upon the number of entries received.

Deadline for entries is March 31 at 10 p.m. Entries must be mailed or submitted in person as an 8 x 10 output so they can be displayed in the restaurant. Files should also be saved as JPG, TIF or GIF on disk. Any theme is welcome except nudity and violence.

Entry forms may be picked up at Benihana, 1447 4th St. Call (310) 260-1423. The tax man cometh soon to a mailbox near you
