A local doctor has risen to the top for his work in sports medicine. Soccer physician Dr. Bert Mandelbaum has been honored by the United States Sports Academy with the 2006 Dr. Ernst Jokl Sports Medicine Award.
Mandelbaum, who practices in Santa Monica, has worked at Pepperdine for the past 15 years and has been medical director for Major League Soccer since its debut in 1996. He was chief medical officer for the United States women’s World Cup soccer teams in 1999 and 2003, and has been team physician for all of the U.S. men’s national soccer teams since 1991.
Prior to working for Pepperdine, Mandelbaum was team physician for UCLA for four years. He also served on the editorial board of the American Journal of Sports Medicine and the Physician and Sports Medicine, as well as an executive board member for the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine.
Mandelbaum has been featured in and helped produce the video: “Ready, set and play: Injury care and prevention in youth soccer,” which received an award from the International Medical Film Society. He has served as a contributor to ESPN Sport Zone and was the orthopaedic surgical consultant to the CBS television drama “Chicago Hope” from 1997-2001.
The Ernst Jokl Sports Medicine Award has been presented by USSA since 1994 as part of the Academy Awards of Sport Medallion Series, honoring the artist and the athlete. Past winners include four-minute-mile runner Roger Bannister and five-time Olympic speed skating gold medalist Eric Heiden.
