The summary of five local senior citizens' lives are out in the open, for all to see. The public is invited to a free art opening and reception Friday, March 4 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Bergamot Station Cafe, 2525 Michigan A3 in Santa Monica. Pico Neighborhood activist Cece Bradley, SMC College Trustee Dorothy Earhart Morrison, Rent Control Board Member Betty Mueller, community leader Millie Rosenstein, and nurse Janet Washington are featured in an art show presented by the Young Leaders of the Santa Monica Commission on the Status of Women.
Julia Simon, a senior at Crossroads High School, was chosen by the Women's Commission as its first Young Leader. Simon created a project to connect high school girls with senior citizens who have paved the way for her generation.
Five high school girls interviewed five senior women and created an art piece expressing the impact of the seniors' lives on young women. "We're All Ears" features original oil paintings, photo montages and matted photos the high schoolers created for each of the senior women. The art exhibit will travel to public venues throughout Santa Monica during March, which is Women's History Month. The exhibit opened March 1 and runs through March 6 at Bergamot Station Restaurant.
March 7 through March 20, the exhibit will hang at Santa Monica Place. March 21 through March 27, the Chamber of Commerce offices will feature it. March 28 through April 3, the exhibit will hang at Crossroads High School. April 4 though April 10, the YWCA will feature it.
For information or to RSVP for Friday's event, call Women's Commissioner Kelly Hayes-Raitt at (310) 474-5545.
