Continuing to spotlight the works of its talented faculty, Santa Monica College will present the ceramics of Richard McColl and Franklyn Phillips March 10 through March 25.
The show will be held in the SMC Photography Gallery, located on the second floor of Drescher Hall, 1900 Pico Blvd. The opening reception is scheduled from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, March 10.
The exhibit will feature ceramics in several forms, including functional vessels, sculpture and ceramic wall hangings.
McColl, with studios in Santa Monica and Venice, has exhibited throughout the nation, and his work is included in private collections around the world. He received a master’s of fine arts from California State University at Long Beach and studied and worked with Ralph Bacerra at Otis Parsons School of Art.
“After more than 25 years of working with clay I feel I have hardly scratched the potential of this medium,” McColl said. “Clay holds a fascination for me which continues to challenge and surprise. Ceramics has a dichotomy of permanence and fragility, plasticity and temperament which demands care. My forms and designs connect with the past while reflecting contemporary culture and environment.”
Phillips has had his work exhibited throughout California, including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. He received his master’s degree in design (ceramics) from UCLA and completed a studio apprenticeship in Malaga, Spain.
“Over the past 37 years working as a ceramic artist, I have developed a range of artwork that struggles to connect our global environmental experience, both positive and negative, to the enchantment of a transcendent universe,” Phillips said. “Charting a course away from the trappings of technology and obsessions with the past, I create artwork of meditation, metamorphosis and the hidden drama of nature, revealed through the clay’s experience of water, air and fire.”
The McColl-Phillips exhibit is the latest in a series of shows this year that have spotlighted the work of adjunct art professors at the college.
