Free entertainment will be provided by the local community college at the local airport this weekend.

The Santa Monica College Theatre Arts Department will present “Equus” from March 17-26. Peter Shaffer’s Tony Award-winning play ran for more than 1,000 performances on Broadway.

The play will be presented Fridays through Sundays. Friday and Saturday shows are at 7 p.m. and Sunday performances at 1 p.m. An additional matinee at 1 p.m. will be on Saturday, March 18.

The play will be in the Hangar Stage, located at SMC’s Airport Campus, 2800 Airport Ave., Santa Monica. Parking is free.

“Equus” centers on the explosive encounters between a 17-year-old boy who has blinded six horses with a spike and the middle-aged psychiatrist who agrees to treat him. Shaffer, who based the plot on an allegedly true story, wrote the play to “create a mental world in which the deed could be made comprehensible.”

“Equus” was made into a film directed by Sidney Lumet. Tickets are $11 general admission and $8 for students and senior citizens. Call (310) 434-3000 or go to http://www.smc.edu/theatre.
