An undoubtedly emotional debate over the church’s position on the death penalty will take place at St. Monica Church this weekend.

The speakers include Mike Farrell, Tom Goldstein and Father David Guffey. Farrell is an actor, producer, writer, director, political and social activist. He also is co-chair emeritus of Human Rights Watch in California, president of Death Penalty Focus and is a member of the advisory board of the National Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty Goldstein was formerly incarcerated. Wrongfully convicted of murder in 1980, Goldstein served 24 years in prison before having his conviction overturned. Had he received the death penalty at his trial, he very easily could have been executed.

Guffey is in residence at St. Monica Church and will discuss the history of the Catholic Church’s teaching on the death penalty.

There will be light refreshments and there is no fee for the presentation, which begins at 7 p.m. in the St. Monica Parish Trepp Center. For more information, contact Delis Alejandro, pastoral associate at, or (310) 393-9287, ext. 331.
