City Proposes $450,000 Safety Upgrades for Cloverfield Boulevard and 20th Street

MAKING STREETS SAFER Cloverfield Boulevard and 20th Street are two of the most heavily traveled streets within the city, particularly in the area between the Santa Monica Freeway (1-10) and Pico Boulevard, according to city staff.

Because of the high traffic, city staff has proposed enhancing accessibility for both vehicles and pedestrians to the tune of $450,000. The enhancements will include wider streets, new sidewalks and increased lighting.

As part of the project, city staff will host a series of public meetings to gather input that will be reflected in the final recommendations.

Amphion Environmental Inc. has been awarded the contract to facilitate the meetings. Amphion beat out two other firms for the contract. Amphion has extensive experience working with City Hall, having served as a consultant on the Transit Mall project, and is under contract in the Big Blue Bus Rapid 3 shelters project.

The process began in June of 2001, as city staff prepared a feasibility study to improve safety, accessibility and aesthetics between the freeway and Pico Boulevard. Several design alternatives were shared with various city departments, including the police and fire departments, Big Blue Bus, solid waste management, and more. Their input was incorporated into the study, city staff said. The project became inactive shortly after that, after funding dried up.

Following a round of community meetings to be scheduled soon, a project design will be finalized, with construction to begin in the summer of 2007.
