An inland cleanup of Compton Creek will occur from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, April 22. Historically, the creek, which feeds into the LA River, has been one of the most polluted water bodies in the region.
Heal the Bay’s Santa Monica Pier Aquarium will host family-oriented Earth Month events from 12:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. on April 22 and 23 with festivities and Earth Day activities.
Rounding out the community service activities is the Malibu Creek State Park Restoration on Saturday, April 29 where volunteers will help restore native plant life to Malibu Creek. Native plants provide habitat for local animals and prevent stream bank erosion.
Heal the Bay will conclude Earth Month with “Commotion in the Ocean,” a fun-filled day of marine exploration and ocean awareness, to be held from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday, April 30, at the Santa Monica Pier Aquarium. The day’s activities will feature arts and crafts, oceanographic demonstrations and celebrity readings of environmental ocean-themed books.
“Human and marine health, as well as the economic well being of our community, depends on controlling runoff and preventing pollution of the ocean,” Gold said. “Our activities help educate people about this situation and give them fun ways to be a part of the solution.”
Also, Heal the Bay will benefit from a 5K/10K benefit run starting at 8 a.m. on Sunday, April 30 at 2600 Barnard Way in Santa Monica. Called the “Carpe Diem Santa Monica Classic,” the run will take participants on a spectacular course to a picture-perfect finish on the Santa Monica Pier.
