Two individuals have taken local books nobody wanted and given them to organizations that do.

Shelly Rosen, an entertainment lawyer, and Mark Johnson, biologist-turned-builder, made lemons into lemonade when they took books that weren’t being sold at the Santa Monica Library and gave them to local charity groups.

The hardbound, paperback and large print books are now being read by people at the City of Hope, St. John’s and Santa Monica-UCLA Hospitals, the Jewish Home for the Aging, Veterans Administration hospitals, Methodist Hospital, the Red Cross, Santa Monica High School, Meals on Wheels, food banks, senior centers, several convalescent and assisted living residences, Emeritus College which is part of Santa Monica College, John Adams Middle School, a local detention center, and churches and synagogues for congregants who are shut-ins.

Some organizations far from Santa Monica now pick up their books. Additional books are being sought, especially large print paperback books and videotapes.

Donors may drop off their books and tapes to the bookstore at the Main Library, 601 Santa Monica Blvd.
