He’s talked to leaders of Hamas, abortion clinic bombers and the 1993 World Trade Center bombers — and now he’s coming to SMC.

Dr. Mark Juergensmeyer, director of global and international studies and a sociology and religious studies professor at the University of California at Santa Barbara, will speak on “Terror in the Mind of God: The Global Rise of Religious Violence” at SMC this Thursday, May 12.

Juergensmeyer is an expert on religious violence and the author of a study on religious terrorism. “Terror in the Mind of God: The Global Rise of Religious Violence,” also the title of the book by Juergensmeyer, was listed by the Washington Post and the Los Angeles Times as one of the best nonfiction books of the year. The book was based on interviews with violent religious activists around the world.

The lecture is co-sponsored by the SMC Associates, a private organization that funds speakers and special programs on campus, and the University of California Press Associates.

The lecture will take place at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, May 12, at SMC. Admission is free.

The talk will be held in SMC’s business building, room 111, 1900 Pico Blvd. Seating is on a first-arrival basis.
