Santa Monica-born artist Rosha Yaghmai opens the new gallery Bandini Art on May 16 with her first solo exhibition “The Song Remains the Same.” Yaghmai, who graduated at Crossroads School, takes beach culture as her subject, making her sculpture from shredded, vintage wetsuits.
“There’s something compelling about the counter-culture movement of the 1960s and ’70s” she said. “The idea of self transcendence that is still being pursued on the West Coast. My work deals with the residue of that California dream.”
Yaghmai’s sculptures hang above candles, or a doused beach bonfire, taking the shape of smoke clouds, or maybe multi-colored thought bubbles. In her hands, discarded remnants of beach life celebrate the innocent freedoms and cherished ideals of our Southern California culture, but also speak of their loss.
“The Song Remains the Same” shows at Bandini Art, 2635 S. Fairfax Ave. in Culver City from May 16 to June 17. Phone, (310) 837 6230. www.bandiniart.com. Bead show comes to SM
