English literature will meet the silver screen at Santa Monica College. William Shakespeare’s “The Taming of the Shrew,” the Franco Zeffirelli version, will be the featured movie in SMC’s “Made Into Movies: Literature to Film” series. The fourth and final film to be screened in the series, “The Taming of the Shrew” combines scholarly insight with entertainment, school officials say.
Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton star in the version of Shakespeare’s comedy, set in Padua, Italy, in the late 1500s. The film received Academy Award nominations for Best Art Direction and Best Costume Design.
The evening will begin with a scholarly introduction to the film, and the screening will be followed by a moderated discussion led by SMC cinema professor Josh Kanin and SMC English professor David Zehr.
The showing will take place on Friday, June 3, at 6 p.m. in room 214 of the SMC art complex, 1900 Pico Blvd. The event is free, and ample free parking is available.
“Made Into Movies: Literature to Film” is co-sponsored by the SMC communication and English departments. For information, call (310) 434-4098 or (310) 434-4588. Malcolm X honored on Saturday
