In the name of community, residents are being asked to open up their veins and let their blood flow.

The American Red Cross will hold a special community blood drive on Monday, June 19, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Blood donations will be taken aboard the Red Cross Bus Bloodmobile which will be parked at the corner of 31st Street and Ocean Park Boulevard in the Santa Monica Business Park.

There is a critical shortage of 0-negative, B-negative and AB-negative blood, Red Cross officials said.

Anyone in good health, 17 years old or older and weighs more than 110 pounds can donate blood. People are asked to bring their photo identifications.

The American Red Cross asks potential donors to be sure to drink plenty of water and eat normally before donating blood.

The American Red Cross also advises making an appointment to donate blood by calling (310) 448-4885. Or sign up online at www.givelife.org. Sponsor code: SantaMonicaCommunity.

If you have any medical questions about donating blood, call the American Red Cross, toll free at 800-843-2949, ext. 7066.
