Fourth of July festivities are coming early in Santa Monica. “Celebrate America” is a night of free fireworks and live bands at Santa Monica College this weekend. Not only are amateur fireworks illegal in Santa Monica, but fireworks displays by trained professionals are the safest, as they are conducted under controlled settings and regulations, according to the nonprofit National Fire Protection Association. Pyro Spectaculars is offering their annual Independence Day Celebration at SMC as a safe alternative to using fireworks at home.

The firework festivities on Saturday, July 1 include performers such as rock group The Tom Nolan Band, and jazz artist Anthony Long.

Attendees may bring picnic dinners; food vendors also will be on site. Alcoholic beverages, glass containers and barbecues are prohibited. Participants are not allowed to bring their own fireworks to the celebration.

The celebration will take place at SMC’s Corsair Field located at 16th Street and Pico Boulevard. The gates will open at 5 p.m. and the performers will begin at 6 p.m. The fireworks will go off at dusk. The outdoor festival is free, but donations are welcome. Parking on the campus is $5.
