As part of its long-running twice-monthly film series, Mt. Olive Lutheran Church will screen “The Mystery of Picasso,” Henri Georges Clouzot’s 1956 classic in which the famed director joins his good friend Pablo Picasso to “capture the moment and mystery of creativity” on film.

The motion picture screen itself becomes the canvas. Picasso, hidden from view, paints behind translucent paper panels while the camera captures reverse images of his brushstrokes. In a single hour, the master creates, and sometimes obliterates, 20 works, ranging from black-and-white sketches to cinemascope color murals which evolve in minutes through stop-motion animation.

The Mt. Olive Film series runs year-round on the second and fourth Saturdays of each month.

The event will take place on July 9 at the Mt. Olive Lutheran Church, 1343 Ocean Park Blvd. A light supper will be served at 6 p.m. The film begins at 6:45 p.m. Admission is free. For more information, call the church at (310) 452-1116. A Third Street Promenade tan
