Biking champ and cancer survivor Lance Armstrong took another step toward finding a cure recently.

The Lance Armstrong Foundation passed out 30 grants of $40,000 each to cancer-fighting, nonprofit organizations, including the John Wayne Cancer Institute.

The LAF community program provides financial assistance and practical advice for community-centered cancer survivorship initiatives.

“The LAF community program grant plays a vital part in the furthering of John Wayne Cancer Institute’s mission,” said Rachel Beller, director of the program, in a press release. “We are honored and excited to be among such an extraordinary group of recipients who all share a passion for helping people with cancer live strong.”

Armstrong founded LAF in 1997 to provide support for people with cancer through public health, advocacy, research and education.

The John Wayne Cancer Institute, founded in 1981, has made advances in melanoma, breast and colon cancer in its 24-year history.
