Santa Monicans will be given the opportunity to experience a grape stomp, troll for salmon and learn why avocados aren’t just for guacamole.

The first-ever “California Grown” Zone brings the farm to the beach on Sept. 12-14. This free, hands-on event provides Southern California residents with opportunities to connect to agriculture in unexpected ways, including an authentic grape stomp, soothing avocado spa treatments, simulated salmon fishing, artistic cheese carving demonstrations, creative garlic braiding and a chicken clucking contest.

Nearly 200 local students from McKinley Elementary and Grant Elementary in Santa Monica, and 6th Avenue Elementary in Los Angeles, are scheduled to attend the event this morning as part of their educational focus on California and agriculture.

The event will take place at the Santa Monica Pier today from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., as well as Saturday and Sunday, from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Participants should meet at 200 Santa Monica Pier.
