Stargazing gets taken to the next level at Santa Monica College’s Friday night astronomy series.

The SMC Planetarium presents the first show in the series, called “Wet & Wild Mars” — an intriguing look at the newest discoveries on the Red Planet — as its feature show in October. The show is scheduled for Oct. 6, 13 and 20 as part of the college’s astronomy series.

The guest lecture will be “Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter: Initial Science Results.” Dr. Richard Zurek of the Jet Propulsion Lab/Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter project will talk about the initial discoveries of the spacecraft, which has a camera so sensitive it could see a beach ball on Mars. The guest lecture will be Friday, Oct. 27.

The feature show and guest lecture are at 8 p.m. Each is preceded by “The Night Sky Show” — which re-creates the night sky and provides the latest information on space exploration — at 7 p.m.

The astronomy shows are held in the John Drescher Planetarium, which features the state-of-the-art Digistar projection system. It is located on the second floor of Drescher Hall, 1900 Pico Blvd. The guest lecture is in Science Lecture Hall 140.

Tickets are $5 each or $9 for the “double bill,” with discounts for children and senior citizens. For information, call (310) 434-3000. Literary series has a ‘Prayer’
