Letter: Homelessness requires a regional approach and mental health funding like Prop. 63

Published:

By MARIA LOYA

The issue of homelessness is a national problem that needs to be addressed at all levels of government. Our country continues to feel the effect of the elimination of funding for mental health services that occurred in the ’80s and we still have not recovered. Addressing the issue of homelessness needs to include not only identifying housing, but also addressing the need for mental health services. On Nov. 2, voters will have an opportunity to support Proposition 63, which will provide mental health services expansion and funding. If elected, I will work with our state and congressional representatives to ensure that we are working on a solution to address the need for mental health services.

In Santa Monica, we have demonstrated to be a compassionate city by providing services and programs that people need to get back on their feet. However, Santa Monica cannot and should not do it alone. Other cities need to do their fair share. We must employ a regional approach to addressing the issue of homelessness. Santa Monica needs to continue to play a leadership role in Bring LA Home committee to ensure that the recommendations made are put in to action.

In the meantime, many of our residents feel overwhelmed with this issue. Residents have voiced concern over the lack of responsiveness by the Santa Monica Police Department when they are called. We must ensure that as a city we are responsive to the needs of our residents.

If elected I will work to ensure that our city is responsive to the needs and issues of our residents and I will work to address the issue of homelessness at a regional level and in a collaborative manner. As a director of public policy and PNA board member, I have experience in bringing diverse groups together and creating solutions.
