Do you ever wonder where your change really goes after you drop it in the jar at the grocery store checkout?

At Whole Foods in Santa Monica, $3,196 last month went to St. Joseph Center, a Westside social service agency.

The donation was the result of a grant from Food For All, a program of the Food Industry Crusade Against Hunger (FICAH), which fights to alleviate hunger and malnutrition worldwide. Whole Foods Market regularly collects money through customer purchases of Food For All cards, available at check-out counters.

This year, Whole Foods Market Santa Monica chose St. Joseph Center to be the recipient of their Food For All funds. The $3,196 will help support the center’s culinary training program, which is a free 10-week course that prepares low-income individuals to enter careers in the food service industry. Most culinary training program students live far below the poverty line. The training enables them to quickly enter the workforce and begin achieving stability and self-sufficiency.
