Santa Monica high schoolers looking to be a local star now have their chance. Santa Monica City TV and the Miles Memorial Playhouse have teamed up to create a competition for high school performing artists with “Downbeat Showdown.” The televised talent show is scheduled for March 2005 at the Miles Memorial Playhouse in Santa Monica.

Inspired by the wild success of the “American Idol” television series and the “Downbeat 720” high school open-mic program, a citywide competition will combine the two. Singers, poets and bands in the ninth through 12th grades can apply.
