“La Nueva California: Latinos in the Golden State” is the title of a free lecture that will be given at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 3 at Santa Monica College.
Dr. David Hayes-Bautista — a widely respected expert on Latino culture and health — will give the talk in the SMC Library, 1900 Pico Blvd. Seating is limited and is on a first-arrival basis. Parking is free.
The lecture is co-sponsored by the SMC Associates, a private organization that funds speakers and special programs on campus, and the University of California Press Associates, which provides support to the University of California Press.
The lecture’s title comes from Hayes- Bautista’s book of the same name that was recently published by UC Press. The book and lecture will address the developing Latino identity of California, and the state’s future as the largest Hispanic state in the nation.
Hayes-Bautista is currently a professor of medicine at UCLA and director of the Center for the Study of Latino Health and Culture. He is a prolific author and researcher; is affiliated with dozens of professional, medical and other organizations and has won many honors for his work.
Hayes-Bautista received his bachelor’s degree in sociology from the University of California at Berkeley, and his master’s and doctorate degrees in medical sociology from the University of California, San Francisco Medical Center.
