For the past 27 years, residents of Santa Monica have lived with their city being jokingly referred to as “The People’s Republic of Santa Monica,” a name bestowed on our home-town by opponents of Rent Control legislation pushed through in the late 1970s. The name stuck, literally, via a popular bumper sticker, and gained national notoriety when Ronald Reagan took his conservative views all the way from nearby Pacific Palisades to the White House.
But many feel the moniker is outdated. So, this week’s Q-Line question asks: Given the state and direction of Santa Monica today, what would be a fitting nickname for the city, worthy of a bumper sticker? Explain. Call (310) 285-8106 before Friday at 5 p.m. and we’ll print your answers in next weekend’s edition of the Daily Press. Please limit responses to a minute or less.
