This summer, there’s much more to do at the city’s libraries than read. Several events are on tap that range from a talk with a veteran Hollywood actor to learning about genealogy and learning how to nurture one’s inner self.
Here’s a line-up of scheduled events at area libraries: WEDNESDAY, JUNE 7: CREATIVE JOURNALING The workshop presents journaling as a means to crack open creative capabilities in writing and drawing. The workshop will be held from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Fairview branch of the Santa Monica Public Library, located at 2101 Ocean Park Blvd. For more information, call (310) 450-0443.
MONDAY, JUNE 26: AN EVENING WITH TAB HUNTER Legendary Hollywood leading man Tab Hunter is featured in film clips, a special interview, and audience question and answer session. Hunter starred in a number of memorable films, including Damn Yankees, Battle Cry, Ride the Wild Surf, Lust in the Dust and Polyester. He will be discussing his life, entertainment career and recent autobiography, Tab Hunter Confidential: The Making of a Movie Star. A book sale and signing will follow. The interview and discussion will be moderated by Dr. Chris Freeman, a professor from the University of Southern California. The event will be held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Martin Luther King, Jr. Auditorium, located at 601 Santa Monica Blvd. For more information about the free public program, contact the Santa Monica Public Library at (310) 458-8600; or visit the library’s Web site at www.smpl.org.
The Montana branch library is especially bustling with events. The following events will take place at 1704 Montana Ave. For more information, call (310) 829-7081 or go to http://www.smpl.org/depts/branches/Montana/ SATURDAY, JUNE 10: JEWISH GENEALOGY WORKSHOP Consider it genealogy 101. The workshop will attempt to explain how to unearth family roots. Barbara Algaze of the Jewish Genealogical Society of Los Angeles will be leading the discussion. Algaze has been researching her own German-Jewish and her husband’s Sephardic roots since 1983, when she began interviewing family members on both coasts of the United States. The workshop will take place at 11 a.m. in the community room.
THURSDAY, JUNE 15: CREATING NEW BEGINNINGS FOR BABY BOOMER WOMEN The purpose of the course is to help baby boomer women, born between 1946 and 1964, explore issues affecting them as they age. Through discussion and the use of a variety of modalities — guided imagery, art, meditation, storytelling, poetry, creative expression — class members will be invited to explore both positive and negative images connected with aging. Class discussions will include topics such as nurturing the inner self, new beginnings, achieving goals, life lessons, the meaning of dreams, accessing creative powers, coping with stress and relationships. The course will be led by art therapists Anne Galbraith and Ruth Subrin. The course will be held at 7 p.m.
