HOLLYWOOD Mandy Moore, Pete Yorn and Phantom Planet are just some of the artists performing this Tuesday at The Roxy for the 16th Annual Gimme Shelter benefit concert for Santa Monica’s New Roads School.
The private school is teaming up with KCRW and Gimme Shelter to help fund its Spectrum Program for autistic children. Developed in concert with Yale University and UCLA, the Spectrum Program is dedicated to giving autistic children a rich and satisfying education, said David Bryan, head of New Roads, which serves students in grades K-12 at its four campuses in Santa Monica, Malibu and West Los Angeles.
This is the second year that Gimme Shelter has teamed up with New Roads.
“We are excited to be involved with Gimme Shelter and KCRW again this year,” Bryan said. “It is a great opportunity to engage with music lovers and spread the word about New Roads college preparatory school and the success of Spectrum.”
Gimme Shelter event producer Gary Spivack said “New Roads is at the forefront of education in Southern California. Not only is it one of the most diverse and respected independent K-12 programs, it also fosters outstanding alternative education and curriculum.
“These kids are exceptionally bright, but do not have the social skills to do many of the things we take for granted,” Bryan said. “These kids can do calculus, but they can’t figure out change when they buy something at the supermarket. It’s not because they can’t do math, but because they don’t understand the relationship between them and the clerk.”
Tickets for the Gimme Shelter event are $20 in advance and $25 at the door. Tickets can be purchased in advance at ticketmaster.com.
Others slated to perform include Matthew Sweet, Suzanna Hoffs and Jesca Hoop.
