Brandi Shearer will be bringing her sultry sound to the always happening Troubadour on Monday. She’s part Norah Jones, part Kelly Clarkson and completely entertaining. She ain’t bad to look at either. Brandi will be taking the show at 9 p.m. and cover is $15 in advance. Prices may vary the day of the show. She is playing on the bill with Fionn Regan, another singer-songwriter with a decidedly smooth vibe. The Troubadour is located at 9081 Santa Monica Blvd. For more information call (310) 276-6168.

What a piece of work
Julieytte Marshall is perceptively “sophisticated, imaginative and satirical,” in her new show “A (Piece Of) Work In Progress.” Written and performed by Marshall, the story follows the challenges of the members of “The Brentwood Divorce Club,” inspired by experiences she’s had living on the Westside. In search of love and happiness, Marshall’s show takes audiences on what critics have called a journey of “outright hilarity.” The show will play Sept. 27 and Oct. 4, 11 and 18 at 8 p.m. For reservations call (323) 960-7792 or get tickets online at www.plays411.com/pieceofwork. Tickets are $20.
Dig these Mongeese
Maimon & the Mongoose Band have been putting a new spin on indie since their 1995 debut album “Soul Deliverance.” The group, led by Maimon Chocron — a native of Montreal from Moroccan and Jewish heritage — combines Sephardic chant, reggae and soul to create a unique and synergetic style, influenced by the likes of Jimi Hendrix and Bob Dylan. In 1979, his entire musical world changed when he first heard Bob Marley’s “Kaya.” It reminded him of Moroccan trance-music he had heard growing up, which later went on to influence his music. Maimon & the Mongoose Band have been an intrinsic part of the Los Angeles music scene for many years, regularly playing at local venues where loyal fans and indie followers can experience their elevating, spiritual sound. Their latest album, “Third Ear,” is described by the band as the place where music starts — the heart. Maimon & the Mongoose Band are performing at Temple Bar located at 1026 Wilshire Blvd., on Thursday. It will be their first show of a new monthly residency the band is beginning at the popular Santa Monica spot. Doors open at 8:30 p.m. and admission is $10.
Get on the Tube
YouTube is the world’s most popular online video community. Everyday, millions of people can discover, watch and share videos from around the world with a click of the mouse. Starting Sunday and continuing through Nov. 9, YouTube is inviting filmmakers from Brazil, Canada, France, Italy, Spain, the United Kingdom and the United States to submit original films between two to seven minutes in length for consideration in the Web site’s first international film competition. A panel of experts, including “Thank You For Smoking” director Jason Reitman, will select 20 finalists and then the YouTube community will vote on the finalists’ films from Nov. 23 through Dec. 2. The winners will be announced on Dec. 5. The winner will spend nine days at an international film festival, as a guest of Hewlett-Packard, where they will meet with Fox Searchlight executives and receive a $5,000 debit card. The winning video will be played on the YouTube homepage in each of the seven competing countries.
