For all the attention paid to American rock bands influenced by the musical trends of Africa, credit must be given where credit is due: African musicians. Enter Hugh Masekela, the South African born trumpeter and flugelhornist who was melding R&B, pop, and the African rhythms of Soweto before the term “world music” was invented. He is perhaps most famous this side of the Atlantic for touring with Paul Simon in support of Graceland. but maybe not for long.
Masekela will be performing with the Chissa All- Stars at Royce Hall, located on the campus of UCLA, on Saturday at 8 p.m. Ticket prices range from $15 (student) to $48. For more information, go to www.uclalive.org.
