Proteus Air Services will host a book talk and signing with author Nina Fresco on Saturday, Aug. 8, to celebrate the release of her new book, "First Around the World: The History of the Santa Monica Municipal Airport."
Fresco will read excerpts from the book, and copies will be available for purchase. The event will take place at Proteus, 2501 Airport Ave., Santa Monica.
The book traces the origins of the Santa Monica Municipal Airport to the 1920s, when aviation was new and rapidly expanding and Santa Monica did not want to be left behind. When the city was offered a strip of dirt near Ocean Park Boulevard to serve as the Santa Monica Municipal Air Field in 1921, it seized the opportunity and made history.
"Author Nina Fresco brings the rich history of Santa Monica Airport to life in this compelling look at aviation in Southern California and its dramatic impact on the City of Santa Monica in the 20th Century," said Mike Machat, curator of the Santa Monica Museum of Flying.
