This Memorial Day weekend will kickoff a new patriotic tradition in Santa Monica.

Banners displaying a picture of an American flag flowing in the breeze will don lampposts lining Main Street between Colorado Boulevard and Pico Boulevard, in front of the city’s Civic Center.

After the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, the city council asked the city to recognize in a tasteful manner the new sense of patriotism and unity across the country.

The city special ordered 22 of the banners and — including putting them up and taking them down for the entire year — the entire patriotic endeavor cost the city $3,000.

The banners will remain up during Memorial Day, Flag Day and until the Fourth of July. Then the banners will be taken down until Labor Day, when they will re-appear and be flown until Sept. 11.

Following that, all national holidays, including Veterans Day and Presidents’ Day, will be celebrated in part with the banners.
