The Santa Monica Public Library invites book lovers to join book discussions and other events related to Christopher Isherwood’s “The Berlin Stories” next month.
Set in a Berlin filled with pleasures, intrigue and danger during the late 1930s when the Nazis were coming to power, the stories were adapted for the stage and the film “Cabaret.”
The program will lead off with experts on Isherwood and Weimar Germany in a panel discussion, “Isherwood in Context,” on Saturday, April 17, from 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Montana Avenue Branch Library. Moderator-led discussion groups during day and evening hours will be held at various venues around the city on April 19-22, April 26--29, and May 1.
Other events include a hosted screening of the film “Cabaret” on April 30, followed by a question-and-answer period. On May 1, the jazz ensemble Moondance will perform “Jazz in the World between the Wars” at the Santa Monica Festival held at Clover Park.
Citywide Reads book discussions and events are free and open to the public. For locations, times and other information, contact the Santa Monica Public Library at (310) 458-8600, or visit the Citywide Reads Web site www.smpl.org/cwr.
