Nearly 100 tennis players, including several breast-cancer survivors, will serve aces against the disease this weekend.
The seventh annual Westside Challenge to Beat Breast Cancer tennis tournament will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 23 at the UCLA/Los Angeles Tennis Center on UCLA’s Westwood campus.
The event will raise money for the low-cost mammography screening program at Santa Monica-UCLA Medical Center, which provides mammograms and follow-up diagnostic care to uninsured or underinsured women in the community. Last year, the hospital provided low-cost mammograms to almost 275 uninsured or underin-sured women, as well as breast health educational materials to more than 8,000 community residents.
The Westside Challenge to Beat Breast Cancer was founded by breast cancer survivor, Nina Nisenholtz.
“I want other women to understand that breast cancer can and will be beaten through education and preventive measures,” she said. “If not for the mammogram, my cancer may not have been detected until it was too late.”
After the tournament, there will be an awards reception and silent auction from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Younger guests will be treated to face painting, entertainment, and a wheel of fortune. For directions to the tennis center, stop at the information booth on Westwood Boulevard north of LeConte Avenue.
