Sources say Seabrooks is new Inglewood chief

PUBLIC SAFETY FACILITY One of the Santa Monica Police Department’s highest-ranking officers is set to become the next chief of police for the city of Inglewood, a source familiar with the selection process said Friday.

SMPD Capt. Jacqueline Seabrooks, the highest-ranking female in the department, is said to be the leading candidate to replace retired Chief Ronald Banks, who left the Inglewood Police Department in May of last year.

The Inglewood City Council is expected to make its decision Tuesday. The source, who did not want to be named because the selection process is confidential, indicated that at least two council members and the mayor had reservations about the hiring, favoring a candidate from inside the department.

Calls to the Inglewood Police Association, which represents officers, were not returned on Friday.

Retired Los Angeles Police Executive Julius I. Davis has been serving in the interim, and it is not known if he is competing with Seabrooks for the job since city officials declined to comment on the selection process, saying only that it has been underway for several months and that the council is expected to discuss the issue Tuesday in closed session.

The council’s closed session agenda for Aug. 14 lists the selection of a police chief as Item 7.

Seabrooks, who served as SMPD’s interim chief, along with Deputy Chief Phil Sanchez and Capt. Mark Smiley, during the city manager’s search for a replacement for former Chief Jim Butts, declined comment.
