CARLSBAD Power plant plans draw praise, concern at public hearing

Published:

About 200 people packed a hearing to comment on plans to replace an aging power plant near the Pacific Ocean.

NRG Energy Inc. would build two, smaller plants capable of powering nearly 400,000 homes and shut down the three older generators. At a later, unspecified date, it would build additional small plants and demolish its existing massive plant.

At a hearing of the state Energy Commission Monday, residents said they were concerned that the project would invite noise and blight. Others were eager for the city to rid itself of the existing plant.

“The power plant’s an eyesore,” said resident Ted Viola. “If you can find something appealing about it, I’d like to know.”
