Santa Monica College instructors will show off their work this month. Faculty members Carol Arutian, Chris Madans, Tina Riggs and Jane Shibata will present an exhibit of mixed media constructions, jewelry and paintings from June 10 through June 24. The opening reception is scheduled from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, June 10.
Arutian, a jeweler and sculptor who has designed for jewelry lines internationally and whose pieces have been exhibited widely, said her work is “inspired by nature — geological and botanical forms, structures and surfaces.”
Madans, whose work has been exhibited throughout the nation and is in the collections of such art lovers as actor Ed Harris, said her small-scale boxed assemblages are created using themes of memories, time passage and issues of identity, loss and transformation.
Riggs, who also has exhibited widely, is directing her fascination with ladders into her work, portraying them in life situations and landscapes, with each one having several layers of meaning. Shibata is an artist, graphic designer and calligrapher with extensive experience and exhibits throughout California. She is using a book format to explore “the ephemeral nature of the sky, its interaction with the urban edges and in-betweens, and the brief moments of the quiet time when the sky touches those edges.”
The “Celestial Landscapes” exhibit is the last in a series of shows this year that has spotlighted the work of adjunct art professors at the college. Gallery hours are noon to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. The show will be held in the SMC Photography Gallery, located on the second floor of Drescher Hall, 1900 Pico Blvd. For information, call (310) 434-4289.
