The Brazilian Girls, a four-piece band — none of which are Brazilian and only one of them is a girl — will be bringing their tropical-funk-meets dub affair to Santa Monica’s Temple Bar on Tuesday. The show begins at 11 p.m.
The band is earning tremendous critical acclaim for their self titled debut album on Verve Forecast “The Brazilian Girls.” The New York Times describes the band as “catchy, musically ambitious and proudly theatrical” and Entertainment Weekly calls them “... unceasingly irresistible.”
The band comprises four globetrotting members — Brazilian Girls formed less than two years ago getting their start with weekly shows at the New York club Nublu. Singer Sciubba hails from Rome, Munich and Nice; keyboardist Didi Gutman is from Buenos Aires. Bassist Jesse Murphy is from California and drummer Aaron Johnston is from Kansas City. All four now call New York home. Their self-titled album is co-produced and engineered by Hector Castillo (Bebel Gilberto, Phillip Glass) and mixed by Mark Plati (David Bowie, The Cure).
The Brazilian Girls debut album presents 12 songs in five different languages: English, German, French, Italian and Spanish.
After listening to this hypnotic electro dub and the sultry tones of Sciubba’s voice, you are definitely left wanting more. The single “Don’t Stop” lends itself to a distinct French slant reminiscent of St. Germain’s Ludovic Navarre meets Hotel Costes. This buoyant house number is bound to get the house hopping.
The night is being presented by KCRW. Also on the bill are singer-song-writer Sara B at 8:30 p.m. and Juju Namjai on at 9:45 p.m. Admission is $8 and tickets can be purchased on the at www.templebarlive.com or by calling 1- 800-594-8499. Tickets also can be bought at the door but are only available on Tuesday after 8 p.m.
