Cleanup needed at beach

The 21st annual California Coastal Cleanup Day is part of an international environmental cleanup event with various activities taking place in 90 countries and all 50 states. The city of Santa Monica hosts six beach sites and a dive/kayak site. The call for volunteers reaches far and wide as buses will assist in bringing inland volunteers to the coast. This year, the Pacific American Volunteer Association — headquartered in Koreatown — plans to bring more than 2,000 volunteers for the beach cleanup at tower 22. In addition to the cleanup, they have arranged for a kite flying contest for the young volunteers followed by a drawing and essay contest.

Time Inc.’s Coastal Living Magazine has teamed up with Heal the Bay and the city of Santa Monica, and will be offering free gift bags to the first 1,000 volunteers on site.

The event will be held on Saturday, Sept. 17, from 9 a.m. to noon.
