Free music at Santa Monica College this week is aimed to honor the talent coming from the campus.
Beginning today, the Santa Monica College music department will present a three-day celebration of the works of famed composers Frederic Chopin and Felix Mendelssohn, featuring piano music, chamber music and songs, and orchestral music.
Concerts in the Chopin/Mendelssohn Minifest — all free — are scheduled for Oct. 11, 13 and 15 in the SMC Concert Hall, 1900 Pico Blvd.
The Chopin/Mendelssohn Minifest brings together the talent of SMC professors, students, alumni and guest artists, all under the direction of SMC music professor James Martin.
This is the sixth such celebration at SMC devoted to composers. In the past, concerts have been organized around the works of such composers as Bach and Beethoven. The programs include a scholarly component, with talks about the composers.
The concerts are: ■ Tuesday, Oct. 11 at 11:15 a.m.: Piano music. The concert is free. ■ Thursday, Oct. 13 at 11:15 a.m.: Chamber music and songs. The concert is free. ■ Saturday, Oct. 15 at 8 p.m.: Orchestral music, featuring the SMC Symphony Orchestra. Tickets are $10. For information, call (310) 434-4323.
