CITY HALL The Santa Monica Commission of the Status of Women is looking for a few good women to fill two vacancies. Applications are currently being accepted on an ongoing basis.
Established in 1981, the commission is charged with improving the status of women in the local community. The commission ensures that issues relevant to women and girls have policies created for them and are investigated. Leadership opportunities and career advancement options are created and made available for women by the commission. To continue these actions and trends, the commission wants to hire Santa Monica residents who commit to supporting, improving, and advocating for the conditions of women, according to city staff.
Currently, the members of the commission are creating a plan to prioritize key goals, objectives, and tasks aimed at improving the opportunities for women and girls in the city. The nine members and one youth intern of the commission regularly recommend policies, programs, and actions affecting women to the City Council.
In 2004, the commission’s Report on the Status of Women and Girls in Santa Monica and the Work/Life Survey both provided data for the business community and other policy-makers concerning education, employment, income, domestic violence and other issues facing the girls and women of Santa Monica.
Additionally, the commission presents one woman each year with the Outstanding Woman Leader (OWL) award. Women who receive the award are chosen because they demonstrate personal or professional dedication to making the lives of girls and women better.
The commission meets every second Wednesday at 7 p.m. and invites the public to participate. Those who are interested may request applications through mail by calling (310) 458-8211 or can apply at www.smgov.net. Applications are turned in at the City Hall, 1685 Main St. in the City Clerk’s office, Room 102.
