COMMUNITY BRIEFS
Wes Thompon is this week’s mystery photo winner. Thompson correctly described where this photo was taken: The facade of Trastavere restaurant at the corner of the Third Street Promenade and Santa Monica Boulevard. Thompson has won a gift certificate to Over Under Sports Bar.
BRIEFS, from page 3 (USA), as well as LA County Sheriff Lee Baca and actors Mark-Paul Gosselaar (NYPD Blue), Felicity Huffman (Desperate Housewives), and Emily Procter (CSI Miami). In the men’s relay division, Team NYPD Blue seized first place with Jensen, a 2004 Olympic Silver Medalist, swimming the first leg followed by Gosselaar on the bike and Elton Lewis running to the finish line for the victory. Team Nautica finished second in the men’s relay followed by Sheriff Lee Baca’s Team in third. In the co-ed relay division, top-finisher Team Less Than Perfect outlasted Team ABC and Team George of The Jungle 2. 2004 Olympic Gold Medalist Amanda Beard’s Team Disney, which consisted of Ingo Rademacher (General Hospital) and Disney President Bob Iger, finished seventh.
Some of the best triathletes in the world competed in the Pro Division race. 2000 Olympic Silver Medalist Michellie Jones (San Diego) was victorious for the women with a time of 1:30:30. Jessi Stensland (San Diego) finished second in 1:31:32 and Nicole Newton (San Diego) third in 1:42:26. In the men’s pro, Derek Kite (Malibu) took home first place in 1:23:30 with Ted Simpkins (Santa Rosa) second in 1:24:22 and Mark Lees (Los Angeles) third with a time of 1:25:11.
The triathlon course consisted of a half-mile swim in the ocean, an 18-mile bike ride along the Pacific Coast Highway, and ended with a four-mile scenic run to Point Dume and back. Racers were immediately confronted with fierce conditions as they began swimming against high surf and a strong rip current.
As title sponsor, Nautica has now helped raise close to $800,000 to benefit The Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation. The foundation creates a future of hope for children and families worldwide by eradicating pediatric AIDS, providing care and treatment for people living with HIV/AIDS, and accelerating the discovery of new treatments for other serious and life-threatening pediatric illnesses.
The Nautica Malibu Triathlon will be televised on Fox Sports Net on Oct. 16.
