The public will have the opportunity to comment on the city of Santa Monica’s grant application for the Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) program from the U.S. Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance. The public comment period will be from Feb. 24 through noon on March 1, with the purpose to get the public’s opinion on the city’s request of $72,362 for 2005. The money would be used to fund the Santa Monica Police Department’s DNA and Advanced Forensic Evidence Testing program.
Since 2000, allocations from the former Local Law Enforcement Block Grant (LLEBG) program have covered costs to submit evidence from major crime scenes for advanced forensic testing at certified crime labs. In 2005, the federal government replaced the LLEBG program with the JAG program and the DNA and Advanced Forensic Evidence Testing program remains an eligible use of the grant funds.
Successful grantees will have four years from the date of the award to expend the funds for the approved uses. The draft grant application is available for public review at the following locations: City of Santa Monica records and elections office 1685 Main St. City of Santa Monica Police Department 333 Olympic Dr. www.santamonicapd.org Written comments regarding the proposed JAG grant application must be received by mail, fax or e-mail no later than 5 p.m. on March 1.
