Composer takes flight at airport

There’s more going on at the city’s airport than aviation. Composer and keyboard virtuoso John Beasley and his band will perform at Typhoon, the family and pilot hangout for Pan-Asian cuisine at the Santa Monica Airport, on Monday, June 5 at 8 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.

The ensemble features Beasley on keyboards; Dwight Trible on vocals; Carlos del Puerto on bass and Marvin “Smitty” Smith on drums.

“Beasley, the one-time keyboardist for Freddie Hubbard and Miles Davis, reflects a variety of generational influences, incorporating the emphatic chordal clusters of Herbie Hancock, the rhythmic quirkiness of Monk and the lush intelligence of Art Tatum into a highly refined personal voice,” said Bill Kohlhaase, former jazz critic of the LA Times.

Beasley’s soon-to-be released CD “One Live Night”— a collection of original contemporary jazz songs written by Beasley — was recorded live at the Baked Potato and features Ralph Moore, Carlos Del Puerto, Dave Carpenter and Gary Novak. He recently returned from the first international jazz festival in Guatemala, an appearance in Rhode Island with Queen Latifah and also will be playing with James Brown at the Hollywood Bowl on Sept. 6. Additionally, he is producing a rap/jazz project and working as a music arranger on television’s “American Idol.”

Typhoon is located on the second floor of the main airport administration building on the south side of Santa Monica Municipal Airport, 3221 Donald Douglas Loop South. For more information call (310) 390-6565. Trio to rock the ‘house’
