Construction crews working at the Annenberg Community Beach Club, formerly the Marion Davies Estate, recently discovered hazardous creosote-containing materials during excavation. The council could add $495,000 to a contract with Midwest Environmental Club for abatement services.
The council last month approved a separate modification to the same contract to remove asbestos discovered at the site.
Creosote, which can be harmful in high doses and can cause burning in the mouth when mixed in with water, was discovered during rehabilitation of the east and north sides of the property at 415 Pacific Coast Highway.
