In her new exhibit, “Unaffected Language — A Conversation Between the Artist and the Materials,” artist m. Rheuban presents her latest works as two series to effectively demonstrate that she is not committed to a single style. Although they are stylistically diverse, the two speak a common language.
The larger pieces in the “Unaffected” series are works on paper. Each is a history of surfaces with a surprisingly sensuous tactile quality. The application of the media to create each layer is a demanding process. It requires that each layer be treated as a finished piece before the next layer is begun. The work includes various types of materials including paint, thread, ribbon, plastic, tape and graphite to name a few.
“Unaffected Language” runs through June 10 at the ArtHouse Gallery, 416 Broadway. Gallery hours are Wednesdays through Sundays, from noon — 6 p.m.
