Earth Day to be celebrated at Palisades Park

Local Santa Monica peace activists Jerry and Marissa Rubin invite the greater Santa Monica community to help re-dedicate and decorate a tree at Palisades Park on Earth Day, which is Tuesday.

The Children’s Tree of Life, located in the park at the intersection of Ocean Avenue and Colorado Boulevard, was originally planted April 22, 1983 and later proclaimed a “living monument to world peace” by the late Santa Monica Mayor Ken Edwards.

The tree has been re-planted three times — twice because of vandals and once because of a maintenance vehicle accident, Rubin said in a press release.

The 20th Anniversary Rededication Ceremony will take place at 3 p.m. The tree — a New Zealand Christmas Tree — will be decorated with peace and environmental symbols.

The Rubins not only planted the tree initially, but also were married next to it in a “Public Peace Rally Wedding” on June 12, 1983.
