Endorsements splinter across council field

Endorsements in the Santa Monica City Council race are scattered across a wide field of candidates, with labor unions, tenant advocates and community groups breaking in different directions rather than coalescing behind a single slate.

The Santa Monica Police Officers Association and the Santa Monica Firefighters, IAFF Local 1109, only endorsed Councilmember Lana Negrete this week but have said additional endorsements may be announced in the coming weeks.

UNITE HERE Local 11, the hotel workers union, endorsed Mayor Caroline Torosis.

Santa Monicans for Renters' Rights endorsed Torosis in the first round and then Danny Ivanov but members fell short of a third pick. However, SMRR's Steering Committee (Michael Soloff, Denny Zane, Tracy Condon, Maria Cortez, Patricia Hoffman, Jennifer Kennedy, Michael Kirshbaum, Cristina Navarro, Michael Tarbet and Craig Walter) added Brett Morrow to the group's final endorsement.

Torosis has also drawn support from Santa Monica Forward, which endorsed her alongside Eli Gill and Morrow, and from the Community for Excellent Public Schools, which split its endorsement between Torosis and Negrete without backing a candidate for the third, open seat.

The Santa Monica Democratic Club made no endorsement after two deadlocked rounds of voting and various municipal employee unions have yet to endorse.
