Learn about eco-tourism, why sustainable development is so important, and what kind of environmental treasures can be found in Santa Monica’s local mountains.
The fall environmental lecture series covers those topics and more beginning with the lecture, “Treasures of Our Santa Monica Mountains,” on Sept. 16 at Santa Monica College. Featuring a wide range of subjects, the series is sponsored by SMC’s Center for Environmental and Urban Studies. The center, which is open to the public, features displays, a library and information center, video collection, native garden, and other services and activities related to environmental and urban studies. SMC has been offering a multi-disciplinary associate of arts degree in environmental and urban studies since fall 2001.
Following the first lecture are, “Climate Change & Energy Policy,” “Ecotourism: The Good & the Bad,” “The New Green Map is Here,” “Irrigation Control Systems,” “Pedestrian Planning in Transportation,” “Building Smart, Sustainable Cities,” “Can Technology Solve Our Transportation Problems?” and “Why is Sustainability so Important?”
All lectures are at 6:45 p.m. in room 145 of the science complex, 1900 Pico Blvd. They are free and seating is on a first-arrival basis. For information, call (310) 434- 4743.
