The Broadway hit musical “Evita” will serve as the opening play for Santa Monica College’s new $17 million theatre facility.

“Evita” is the story of Eva Peron, an ambitious actress who married Juan Peron, the ruler of Argentina, and won the country’s love and support before her early death in 1952 at the age of 33. The original Broadway production won seven Tony awards, including Best Musical.

SMC will interpret the Tony Award-winning musical on Oct. 13-22. The Andrew Lloyd Webber/Tim Rice play will be presented Fridays through Sundays. Friday and Saturday shows are at 8 p.m., and Sunday performances at 2 p.m. An additional matinee will be held on Saturday, Oct. 21, at 2 p.m.

“Evita” will be presented on the Main Stage of the new Theatre Arts Building, which opened for classes Aug. 28. The theatre is on the main SMC campus, 1900 Pico Blvd. Parking is free.
