Are you a girl who needs power? On Aug. 17, from 3:30 p.m. to 6 p.m., the YWCA Santa Monica/Westside will offer a free one-time workshop for a group of 12-to 14-year-old girls to see if they’d like to participate in a free 10-month exploration of girls’ issues, ending in what’s been dubbed a “Girl House Art Project” and public exhibition.
The topics covered from September 2005 to June 2006 include: girl power, body wisdom, how girls are presented on T.V., and famous women from history. Activities will include art, interactive exercises, videos, designing the Girl House, guest speakers and two field trips.
During the free one-time Aug. 17 workshop led by Kesa Kivel, volunteer project leader, participants will hear more about the project, do an art activity and eat snacks.
The workshop and 10-month Girl House Art Project will be held at the YWCA Santa Monica/Westside, 2019 14th St. Call Barbara Olinger at the YWCA (310) 452-3881 to register. No prior art experience required. The YWCA Santa Monica/Westside provides community service programs to women and children in more than 10 westside communities.
