The Santa Monica Fire Department will hold a community remembrance ceremony marking the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, inviting residents to honor the lives lost and the first responders who answered the call.
The ceremony will take place from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 11, at Fire Station 1, 1337 7th St. It will bring together firefighters, city officials, community members and local public safety partners for a morning of reflection.
The department holds a Sept. 11 remembrance each year as part of the National Day of Service and Remembrance. This year's ceremony offers an especially meaningful opportunity to remember those who died, including the 343 firefighters killed while responding to the World Trade Center, the department said.
Community members are invited to attend and stand in solidarity with the city's firefighters and public safety community. The ceremony will include moments of reflection honoring the lives lost and recognizing the courage and selflessness of first responders.
Fire Station 1 is also home to a steel artifact recovered from the World Trade Center site, on permanent display outside the department's community room. The artifact serves as a tangible reminder of the day and is available for public viewing during normal business hours.
Twenty-five years later, the department said, it continues to honor the legacy of Sept. 11 by remembering those who were lost, recognizing those who served, and reaffirming the importance of community, service and resilience.
