“Celebrate America” has been the only Independence Day celebration of its kind in Santa Monica since a city-wide fireworks ban was enacted more than a decade ago. The event continues to be a local favorite, with audiences from across Los Angeles gathering in and around the college to view the star-spangled pyrotechny.
“It’s SMC’s big valentine to the community,” said Public Information Officer Bruce Smith. “It offers an early start to the city’s Independence Day festivities.”
The event is great for families with kids, Smith said, because it takes place at a safe, contained public location.
The patriotic extravaganza will be staged at 16th Street and Pico Boulevard. Gates open at 5 p.m. and entertainment begins at 6 p.m., concluding with the fireworks display at sundown.
Alcoholic beverages, glass containers, barbecues and personal fireworks are prohibited. Parking is $5. For details, call (310) 434-3001.
